Supporting Your Colleague Between Sessions

Why it matters

Your colleague will have coaching sessions regularly throughout the programme. What happens between those sessions shapes how much they actually take from it. The conversations you have with them, the opportunities you create for them to practise, and the way you notice and acknowledge their progress all make a real difference.

Check in regularly

You do not need a formal structure for this. A brief, honest conversation every few weeks is enough. Some questions worth exploring together:

  • How are you finding your coaching sessions so far?
  • Are you able to give the programme the time and energy it needs?
  • What are you focusing on right now?
  • Is anything getting in the way?
  • How can I or the team support you?

Create space to practise

Look for situations where your colleague can apply the skills connected to their goals. If they are working on delegation, give them room to try it. If they are building confidence in presenting, invite them to lead a meeting. Real practice is where the work lands.

Recognise their progress

When you notice your colleague showing up differently, say so. Acknowledging small wins reinforces the habits they are building and keeps momentum going across the programme.

Have a broader career conversation

At some point during the programme, make time to talk about where your colleague wants to go. Help them think about their future direction and who they might benefit from connecting with. This broader perspective adds an important layer to the work they are doing with their coach.
